Troy John Stacey has been respectful in each of several court appearances he has made over the past year.
But Albury Local Court magistrate Richard Funston said this was in sharp contrast to the way he treated his former partner.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"It really staggers me the behaviour you previously subjected the complainant to," he told Stacey on Tuesday, after jailing him for two years.
Mr Funston said Stacey, appearing via a video link to Sydney's Long Bay jail, presented now "as a totally different person".
"It was brutal," he said of the attack, which happened in a Lavington motel room on February 14, 2020.
Stacey, 43, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and contravention of an apprehended violence order.
RELATED:
Stacey and the victim, 42, were in a sporadic relationship from May, 2019.
The woman was later granted an AVO. This stipulated that Stacey not "assault, threaten, stalk, harass or intimidate" the woman.
She booked the motel room on the day of the attack.
The pair began to argue while she was making sandwiches in the room about 2pm.
"The argument escalated and the offender threw the victim on to the bed and she fell on the floor, where he pinned her down," a set of agreed facts said.
"The victim managed to break free by biting the offender's ear and attempting to gouge his eyes while he had her pinned down on the floor."
Defence lawyer Mark Rosalky said he asked Stacey how he felt about what he did "and he said, 'not real good'".
Director of Public Prosecutions representative Mihir Ranadive said the victim was "pinned to the ground, she was thrown around; this would have caused considerable fear".
She also suffered extensive bruising to her face, arms and legs.
A non-parole period of 12 months will have Stacey eligible for release on March 30.
