AFL North East Border has welcomed a further nine umpires to its ranks in the past week, but is still below its requirement for the 2021 football season.

The organisation has 148 registered umpires, which includes 75 field, 47 boundary and 26 goal officials.
Operations manager Michael Bocquet said the usual weekly requirement for the senior leagues is 68 field, 50 boundary and 28 goal umpires.

"With the number of split rounds and byes in the first two weeks, we have some extra time, with the required numbers under 40 field umpires," he said.
"Once the Hume league starts on April 10, our required numbers go up to 64 and 68 the following week when Upper Murray starts."
Bocquet said another concern is the lack of volunteer club umpires.
