Peter Jones, 19, floored the BMW at Bonegilla on October 20 last year, reaching a speed of 166km/h.
Wodonga police were near the Murray Valley Highway and Mcintoshs Road when they spotted the car on their radar.
Jones had put his foot down as he came around a bend in the road.
Police stopped his vehicle and asked him to explain his actions.
The Wodonga Magistrates Court heard the teenager had made full and frank admissions to what he had done.
"I wanted to test out the car I guess," he told police members.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The 19-year-old White Box Rise resident told the court as a result of the disqualification he was facing, he would likely lose his job in customer service.
He had already paid $1200 to get the BMW out of impound.
Police had the vehicle towed after the incident due to the danger posed by Jones' driving.
Magistrate David Faram told Jones he would be disqualified from driving for 12 months.
"It makes you realise just how valuable your licence is Mr Jones," he said.
"It comes at a high price indeed, plus the money to get your cousin's vehicle out."
He was further hit with a $750 fine in court.
"It's a very expensive exercise Mr Jones," Mr Faram said.
