Last year, COVID restrictions and snap lockdowns decimated winter alpine tourism. Although the snow season was scheduled to begin in June, it was delayed until July 6.

But on July 9 the Victorian government reinstated Stay at Home lockdown in the state, forcing the resorts to close.

Parent company Vail Resorts announced ski-lifts would be suspended at Falls Creek and Mount Hotham.

The Alpine National Park was also closed by government order.

The resorts did not reopen to visitors until September.

The closures and delays were labelled by tourism operators as a 'monumental blow', especially as it came after the bushfires and smoke tainted the alpine region's summer trade.

This year, having already received a smattering of April snow, Falls Creek is preparing for skiers and snowboarders to return to the slopes.

Director of Marketing and Communications Sarah Watt said operators were seeing high demand for accommodation and she encouraged visitors to book their snow holiday as early as possible.

"Falls Creek Resort is preparing for a huge season after the outcome of 2020," she said.

"The excitement is building for this snow season and we anticipate an electric vibe in the village on opening weekend as snow lovers reunite at their favourite resort.

"As introduced in 2020 visitors are required to purchase their resort entry permits online before arriving at the resort.

"This will offer a more seamless experience and less time waiting to come through the gate."

The mercury will return to sub-zero from Wednesday with a minimum temperature of -5 forecast.
