After an even first-half the Cats produced their best quarter of football this season during the third term, piling on seven goals to one on their way to a 18.10 (118) to 11.9 (75) upset victory.
Key forward Michael Cooper led the onslaught with a seven goal haul and was the most dominant player on the ground.
Ian Kay, Josh Quick and Adam Enever also played a starring role in the Cats' biggest win for several seasons.
Although the Hoppers were below full-strength, the loss poses serious question marks on their grip on flag favouritism with Barnawartha, Chiltern and the undefeated Yackandandah the early pacesetters.
IN OTHER NEWS
Rookie Cats coach Steve Owen wasn't surprised by the upset win.
"I feel if we produce our best football we are capable of matching any side in the competition," Owen said.
"The last couple of weeks there were lapses which proved costly.
"But internally we know our best is good enough.
"Tallangatta is a genuine flag contender and we will take a lot of confidence out of the win.
"It's certainly one of the most satisfying wins the club has had for several seasons."
