About 150 people took part in the Walk for Autism, between Oddies and Noreuil parks, on Saturday morning.
The event was in support of the Aspect Riverina School.
Teone Mitchell's grandson, six-year-old Eli, attends the school.
Ms Mitchell said there was a "buoyant" atmosphere at the event.
"I've found the school to be very good - he's accepted for who he is," she said.
"The school has been wonderful in getting the best out of him.
"They recognise his talents and engage him in a positive way."
Principal Jane Carrington said money was still being counted on Sunday, but was confident the fundraising goal of $10,000 would be reached.
About $8600 had been raised with donations made on the day still to be tallied.
"It's predominantly about awareness," she said of the event.
"Awareness increases understanding of autism.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"The money raised goes to student resources and specialist teaching materials the children need.
"We're always looking for ways to ensure they've got absolutely everything they need.''
The event has previously been held on the school's grounds.
Saturday was the first time it was held in public.
"There were a lot of happy people," Ms Carrington said.
"There was a lot of positive feedback from people in the community which was really lovely."
