And it could become an annual event.
The Rotary Club is holding a series of events to collect $200,000 and bring a Peace Bell to Albury-Wodonga.
The World Peace Bell Association is a Japanese organisation that tries to raise awareness of the world peace movement by casting and installing Japanese temple bells in locations around the world.
Rotary project co-ordinator Jos Weemaes hoped the project would bring people together.
"We want the bell to be a focal point in a place like Belvoir Park for peace, not just in the world but at home," he said.
"We're fundraising today through entry and the barbecue.
"If we raise $1500, we'll be happy."
Rotary Club secretary Clive Faul hopes to involve schools in the movement and said Saturday's event at the Albury Wodonga Kart Club on Sheathers Road was a great partnership with the Australian Ride On Lawn Mower Racing Association.
"I happened to come across an advertisement somewhere, and I thought 'what a wonderful alternate way of raising money'," he said.
"I contacted the association and then went to Cobram to look at a race.
"They've been great to deal with.
"We're talking to them about future dates."
Mr Faul hopes to bring the Association back, which came to Wodonga for the first time.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"They've been close - they were at Ettamogah, but they come from all over the place, like Lakes Entrance and Young," he said.
The next major fundraiser will be a black-tie Peace Bell dinner at The Cube Wodonga.
It will take place on Saturday, July 24.
