The Border's community transport capacity received a huge boost this month as Kirinari Community Services took delivery of the first four of nine upgraded buses.
The Mercedes Benz Sprinter transport buses will offer extra safety and comfort to frail aged and transport disadvantaged residents from the Albury, Federation and Greater Hume shires, according to Kirinari development manager Phil Hartley.
But the expanded transport fleet could also provide a wider range of community support options "outside our peak morning and afternoon transport times," he said.
"As current COVID restrictions ease and the community becomes more comfortable with accessing events in the region, Kiranari is hoping to provide opportunities for social outings in these new vehicles."
Kirinari CEO Diane Lynch said ongoing funding support from the NSW Department of Transport had helped ensure community transport services in the region continued.
The first delivery of buses marks a significant partnership between Interleasing and Kirinari that will see the organisation upgrade the bulk of its bus fleet.
"This partnership to upgrade our fleet will ensure the highest safety, accessibility and comfort for our customers," Ms Lynch said.
"In addition to community transport, customers from The Buzz, Kirinari's day program for people with a disability, will be the first to benefit from the improved accessibility and safety features on show in the new vehicles."
Kirinari worked with Nordens, who supplied the specialised access systems, and Mercedes Benz engineers to ensure all the equipment enhanced safety for users.
Interleasing Australi's Terry Koutsouras explained some of the key benefits of the buses' new feature.
"The lift and reverse sensors and beeper are wired into the Mercedes Benz Sprinters Management system," he began.
"By doing this we have been able to program the bus to do simple things like turn off the power to the lift when the rear door is closed, using the inbuilt switch.
"The bus is also programmed so it cannot be driven away with the lift deployed, adding further peace of mind."
