The league has more than 40 players who make the weekly trek, with Myrtleford, Wangaratta and Wangaratta Rovers boasting the greatest number.
They, naturally, are the biggest losers from the decision.
It means Myrtleford will be without co-captain Matt Dussin, its best player this season in Matt Munro and former AFL player Taylor Hunt, among others.
Wangaratta will lose a third of its team, including Morris Medal favourite Callum Moore, gun defender Mat Grossman and the Anderson brothers, Jamie and Mark.
Rovers will also be missing a set of siblings in Dylan and Ryan Stone, plus the league's best defender in Tyson Hartwig, Sam Murray and Co.
The season will resume after a four-week break on June 12, with the following draw:
- Corowa-Rutherglen v Wangaratta Rovers
- Albury v Myrtleford
- North Albury v Wodonga Raiders
- Wangaratta v Yarrawonga (venue - TBC)
- Wodonga v Lavington (at Lavington Sportsground)
However, those games will only proceed if crowds are allowed to attend.
The Border Mail delves into who's been the winners and losers out of it.
WINNER: COROWA-RUTHERGLEN: The Roos have hit the jackpot. They resume with Wangaratta Rovers, who will be missing a third of their starting outfit. Now at full strength the Hawks are a genuine premiership contender. Any team that can beat Wangaratta, as the Hawks did in the best game in years in round three, can take the flag. But in their next game, against the winless Yarrawonga, Rovers went in without four top players, including Tyler Roos and Ryan Hebron, and lost by 20 points. Now is the ideal time to play the Hawks and while a loss certainly won't end the Roos finals chances, a win against a top three side will be an incredible bonus.
WINNER: MYRTLEFORD: Look, let's be honest, on recent form the Saints weren't going to beat Albury, The Tigers are 7-0 and Myrtleford is 4-3. More importantly, the Saints have either just lost (Wodonga Raiders) or just won (Yarrawonga, Wodonga) against teams five through nine. Now naturally, the Saints will argue this is sport and anything can happen. But if you are going to be severely understrength for a game, it might as well be against the best side. You were likely to lose anyway, so this is a 'free hit'. Most clubs are likely to fall to Albury as well, so you're not losing ground on teams you're battling for the top three.
ALSO IN SPORT:
LOSER: WODONGA RAIDERS: Similar scenario to Myrtleford, but in reverse. Raiders only have one Melbourne-based player (Dylan Clarke), so they will easily account for North. As Raiders are battling desperately for finals, this is the time you want to play a Rovers or Myrtleford, another club around the same mark. Or a Wangaratta, where you could sneak a win that others won't when Melbourne players return.
