A Wodonga motorist who crashed into a concrete pole after a failed attempt to turn right had downed 15 bottles of beer in 12 hours, a court has heard.

Robert McGrandles later provided a blood alcohol sample five times the legal limit.
The 57-year-old's charge of driving with a high-range prescribed concentration of alcohol has gone before Albury Local Court, unlike the man himself.

Defence lawyer Mark Cronin told magistrate Richard Funston there was a sound reason for his client's non-appearance.
"To his credit, he has gone into rehabilitation," Mr Cronin said.
It was accepted that McGrandles had recorded a very high reading
McGrandles, Mr Cronin said, was undertaking a six-month program at the Calvary private hospital in Wagga.
Mr Funston agreed to Mr Cronin's submission that the case be further adjourned, to August 30, to allow McGrandles to settle into the program.
On that date the court will be updated on McGrandles' progress.
Police came across McGrandles standing beside his car after the failed attempt to turn into Hume Street, Albury, from David Street on April 22 about 11pm.
His reading was 0.267.
