Officers will be stationed at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek from Thursday ahead of the official ski season opening this weekend.
Bright Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll said the road between Mt Hotham and Harrietville could be forced to close if extreme weather hits the region.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued flood warnings and winds up to 90km/h are forecast for Mt Hotham.
"The Great Alpine Road could be shut depending on the conditions," he said.
"People should check the status of the road before heading up to avoid delays."
While Melbourne residents are at this point banned from attending the snow, the ski fields are still open to regional residents.

Senior Sergeant Incoll said about 30 per cent of resort attendees were from regional areas and he urged them to be prepared for the conditions.
Police will be checking vehicles have diamond pattern snow chains and will be enforcing the road rules, with several vehicles crashing off the side of mountains last year.
"It was more good luck than good management the occupants weren't badly injured or killed," he said.
"It's really important people heed the advice messages to get up there in one piece.
"Police will be checking for chain compliance, drug and alcohol driving, and speeding.
"It's also important if people are back country skiing that they're well prepared with the right clothing and they let people know where they're going."
People are also urged to have emergency position indicating equipment, and a map and compass.
Emergency workers are often involved in rescue operations during the snow season.
"It's vital people are prepared," Senior Sergeant Incoll said.
