Federation councillors and management met in a confidential session on Tuesday for the latest update on talks with Amber Airports which began in 2018.

The proposed training facility was touted to create 150 jobs, comprising flight instructors, trainers and assessors, engineers, managerial staff, administration staff and support staff.

But in a summary on the council agenda, Federation general manager Adrian Butler said: "This report allows council to consider the negotiations with respect to council and (Amber Airports), for the potential long term lease of the Corowa aerodrome and provide direction for the way forward.

"With the COVID-19 pandemic and other matters with respect to the infrastructure at the site, negotiations have not resulted in a lease being executed with (Amber Airports), as was intended prior to COVID-19.

"The global impacts (severe decline) on airline operations is also a factor council needs to consider."

Councillors resolved to note a verbal report from the confidential session with a further report coming at the July meeting.

Another sticking point was upgrades on the aerodrome's two runways, aprons and taxiways to meet Civil Aviation Safety Authority standards.

Works valued at $561,158 have taken place, but a further $436,348 was needed on tarmac improvements with a recent grant application unsuccessful.
