The Riverina's longest-serving council general manager Steven Pinnuck is departing his job after nearly a quarter of a century.
The Greater Hume Council general manager has been in the position since 2004 when the council formed, and before that led Culcairn Council from October 1997.
He said he'd originally planned to finish as general manager at the end of this month, but arranged to stay another year when council elections were postponed due to COVID-19.
"I've been with Culcairn and Greater Hume for a long period of time, so it's probably time for both council and myself to look at doing something a little differently," he said.
"While I wouldn't necessarily be looking for full-time work I probably will be looking for part-time opportunities inside or outside local government."
Mr Pinnuck said at nearly 64, it felt like the right time to consider the next step.
"I think as anybody approaches this sort of stage in their life there is some nervousness about it," he said.
"Given that I left school at 16 and then went to uni as a mature age student, I haven't been out of the workforce for any period of time for 46 years, so that's going to take some level of adjustment.
"That's why I think that part-time work at least for a few years would be good for my mental health and moving forward."

Greater Hume Council plans for a new general manager to start in July next year.

Mr Pinnuck said it was a very senior appointment so it was important for council to go through a rigorous selection process to get the right candidate.
"Greater Hume Council, whilst it's only a medium sized rural council, it is quite complex in relation to the number of towns and villages that we've got," he said.
"It'll take a person with the right skills to come into the role to take the council forward."
Mr Pinnuck said he would fill his time after council travelling and with family.
"We've bought ourselves a fairly reasonable caravan and travel's certainly going to be a priority past the first of July," he said.
"But obviously all of our family live locally, so spending more time with family will probably be a good opportunity as well."
The position will be advertised for about a month from mid-February.
