A mechanical engineer who specialises in heavy vehicle failures has described tests used by a company to check for wear as "a lazy mechanic's procedure" and "a dangerous one".

William Kennedy said long term wear on truck and trailer towing components, which failed before a triple fatal crash at Staghorn Flat on August 7, 2014, should have been picked up during servicing.
Heavy Mechanics serviced the BP truck and trailer and is standing trial.
Mr Kennedy, who gave evidence over several days, said he wouldn't use the test used by the business to check for movement.

Mr Kennedy was also asked if the failed tow coupling was serviceable.
"Absolutely not," he replied.
He said if the manufacturer's requirements were followed, the wear should have been found during servicing.
WorkSafe Inspector Matthew Read also told the court the business had no priors for offences and no improvement or prohibition notices issued.
The prosecution has finished its case with the trial to resume in the Wodonga County Court on Tuesday.
