The Woomargama Hotel has embraced this role and has had a series of renovations over the last eight months to provide locals and visitors a warm and welcoming meeting place and respite from the stresses of daily life.
Manager Damien Hibberson-Backhouse said the upgrades to the building since had been an exciting development.
"Woomargama's only a small country town," he said.
"I think there's only 156 people living in Woomargama and it's just giving back to the community."
He said the renovations would encourage people to support the local business after many had a tough time during COVID-19 restrictions.
Dean Henry has overseen the pub's refurbishment.
He said there had been "a whole pile" of renovations including improvements to the front entrance, redesigned toilets, a fresh coat of paint on the walls, a new heating and cooling system installed, new carpet, the replacement of some glass doors, and a refurbishment of the private dining room.
"The list goes on," he said.
RELATED NEWS:
Mr Henry declined to answer how much the renovations had cost, but said it was a "substantial amount of money".
Mr Hibberson-Backhouse said a new deck area outside the hotel had been approved and was expected to be finished by spring.
"It's just creating an outdoor space," he said.
"It's just to add extra space to the building, because we are a very small building, but also we can get some nice live bands outside and create an atmosphere where people can come with families and just a nice night out.
"It used to be quite a cold atmosphere, so we've just brightened it up, made it a bit warm, more inviting, just to pop in and enjoy.
"And during the day we've go beautiful scenery all over, nice hills to look at, so it's just giving everyone something to look forward to on the weekend."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Henry said the renovations had revitalised the hotel, which was built around the 1950s.
"All the locals on Facebook have commented about how good it looks and the atmosphere that's in there and how much more comfortable it is in there," he said.
"It makes it the place to be in Woomargama and also probably Holbrook.
Mr Henry said the pub had started doing courtesy bus runs.
"We go and pick up people from Holbrook and other surrounding towns," he said.
"We have ladies and hens nights, we have karaoke, we have bands.
"And that all provides the community with somewhere to go and enjoy their off time."
