The home team led by 28 points at half-time on a heavy track, but with their season on the line the Roos were terrific in falling 7.8 (50) to 5.7 (37).
The visitors were superb in restricting the top three contenders to only two behinds in the third quarter and they added only one goal in the final stanza to hold on in a thriller after the margin was cut to a goal late.
The dangerous Lachie Dale was the game's leading goalkicker with three, while Charlie Nastasi produced the Roos only multiple output with two.
In a wonderful sign for the Saints, co-coach Dawson Simpson returned in style from six weeks off due to the COVID break and a foot complaint.
The man mountain was terrific in the conditions, while Taylor Hunt was also named in their best for the second successive week.
Matt Munro is potentially the league's most consistent player as he's now been named in the best in all nine games he's played, only missing one match due to the ban on Melbourne players on June 12.
For the second successive week, the Roos kicked 1.5 in the first half and that has effectively destroyed their finals hopes.
However, the club has improved markedly on its five wins over the four previous seasons with a stalwart in Kade Kuschert joining Cody Howard and Damien Wilson in the best.
