After playing one match in the reserves the previous week, Blues coach Brayden Carey had no hesitation in elevating Cleven into the seniors against the Demons.
Cleven booted two goals in the Blues' thumping 25.16 (166) to 4.7 (31) win over Corryong.
Carey said there was plenty of pressure for spots in the Blues' line-up who are the raging flag favourites and undefeated after seven rounds.
"For some reason most people think big Jim is a dinosaur but he is only 37 and has got quite a few seasons ahead of him if he can stay injury free," Carey said.
"Jim played his role and ended up with a couple of goals.
"Everybody has to play well to hold their spots and our reserves are also undefeated.
"Blokes have to turn up to training to get a game now and all the players realise that which is good.
"We have been getting 30 plus to training most nights which is previously unheard of since I've been coach."

The Demons were playing their first match in a month after Victoria's recent lockdown and having the bye last week.
Despite the layoff the home side was able to match their more fancied opponent for most of the opening quarter.
But the floodgates opened after quarter-time as the Blues piled on 19 goals to two to notch another percentage boosting win.
Key forward Kylin Morey finished with a dozen majors and is averaging more than 10 goals a match after five appearances so far this season.
Mitch Pynappels, Dayne Carey and Michael Voight ensured Morey had plenty of opportunities to add to his already impressive goal kicking tally.
Morey now has 53 goals for the season and looks set to give the 100 goal milestone a real shake if he can remain injury free.
Bullioh also scored a huge 161-point victory over Federal.
Jacob Curran was the Bulldogs best with six goals.
