The offending driver fled the scene of the crash after driving into the side of the family's car about 12.30pm on Sunday.
The man drove his vehicle from Carraragarmungee Estate Road onto the freeway, hitting the side of the family's car, and drove back to his home.
He was arrested a short time later and was taken to hospital.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Police believe alcohol was involved in the Boralma crash and are awaiting blood test results.
Sergeant Scott Mundie said if the driver had pulled out earlier, the hit vehicle would likely have been T-boned and caused a far worse outcome.
"At a minimum, he will be facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident," he said.
"It could have been a hell of a lot worse.
"There were nil injuries all round."
Both cars were badly damaged.
