Fire crews from Corowa and Wahgunyah responded to the house fire on Cadell street from about 5pm yesterday afternoon.
Fire and Rescue NSW Zone commander superintendent Stewart Alexander said no one was injured, but it was a "dreadful" situation for the occupants.
"It's really really sad for them," he said.
"I believe the occupants were away at the time, but again, it's quite unfortunate that all of their home has been destroyed and their possessions inside there as well.
"The house was well alight on arrival and [firefighters] could see large plumes of smoke on the way and when they got there they immediately got to work.
"Unfortunately despite their best efforts the home has been totally destroyed and it's subject to investigation, as to the cause, by NSW police."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Superintendent Alexander said it was "very difficult to say" whether the blaze was suspicious, but nothing was being ruled out.
He said crews controlled the blaze in about 35 minutes, but stayed for further two and a half hours to ensure the debris was fully extinguished.
"It's a timely reminder particularly in the colder weather that you make sure you have a working smoke alarm and call triple zero (000) immediately for all fires and life threatening emergencies," he said.
"And certainly take a bit of extra caution because statistically winter is our busiest time where we get the most home fires, because that's when people have heaters on and are drying clothes too close.
"And simple things like cleaning your lint filter out in the clothes dryer."
