Now the children of Howlong Preschool are asking family and friends to help them track the whereabouts of their gingerbread man, who is on the loose.
Created by educator Miss Rikki, the gingerbread man jumped out of the oven, puffed her with flour, ran out of the preschool and off down the road, leaving behind a letter for students:
"There are some amazing places and animals to see, but I'll never stop running, no you can't catch meeeeeee!!"
Preschool director Olivia-Rose Pepper said the novel idea was being used to scaffold learning about "our beautiful country Australia".
The idea is for friends and extended family members to track the adventures of the gingerbread man by sending post cards from different places across Australia.
They are being asked to send a post card to Howlong Preschool, 95 Townsend Street, Howlong, NSW 2643 with the following words:
"(Your name),
"Run, run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man."
In a letter to loved ones, the preschool children said they hoped the gingerbread man returned one day because Miss Rikki was hungry.
"We hope he will send us some post cards of all the places that he visits," they wrote.
"Please watch out everyone in our families, he might even be in your oven!"
The learning initiative, also being shared with the preschool at Rand, was sparked by a young student bringing a gingerbread man to school in his lunch box.
Ms Pepper said the fun idea provided an opportunity to involve families and the community in children's learning.
"It's started already with grandparents writing from Hervey Bay," she said.
"As each postcard comes in, we will link into learning about each town."
