Man abused partner on bus back from Dederang races, punched other woman to face

Police told Albury Local Court that Jackson Slade's actions were such that he should be handed a jail sentence.

But ultimately Slade avoided jail, being placed on an 18-month community corrections order over the incident that resulted from him abusing his partner on a bus back to Albury.

After getting off the bus, Slade punched Kathy Margaret Emmins to the face, causing heavy bleeding.

She had earlier decided to say something after witnessing Katrina Payne being left in tears over what was said to her by Slade.

During the fight, Payne punched Slade, Emmins hit Slade to the head with a bottle and arresting police were grabbed, pushed and assaulted.

During Emmins' sentencing in early June, magistrate Richard Funston described what Slade did as "very serious, ugly offending" and the incident overall as "hideous".

But Mr Funston told Slade this week that his early plea of guilty had counted in his favour on sentence.

"(A CCO is) much better than a jail sentence, much better than an intensive corrections order," he said.

"But the reality is you were the main instigator of this. You now have to move forward and not commit any further offences."

At the previous sentencing hearing, Emmins, her partner, Ryan McPherson, and Payne avoided conviction.

Each of them were placed on conditional release orders, the first two for six months and Payne for 12 months.

The fight happened on the evening of March 13.

Slade, 29, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and intimidation.
