More than 80 people have registered for Submarine Disasters and Survival, a free webinar hosted by Friends of Holbrook Submarine Museum and the Submarine Institute of Australia.

FHSM secretary Thor Lund said bookings had been received from Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, US, Vietnam, India, China, Indonesia and Malaysia as well as throughout Australia.

The interested parties include current Navy personnel, submarine industry people, rescue organisations and historical societies.

Mr Lund said the tragedy earlier this year involving the Indonesian KRI Nanggala submarine led to discussions on its cause and the rescue attempts.

"There's probably some mysteries out there, people concerned about what would happen if we lost one of our Collins class, what's the capacities we have in the region for this sort of thing," he said.

The webinar panel members - Frank Owen, Peter Horobin, Toff Idrus and Brad Smith - each have decades of submarine or diving rescue experience.

"Australia's somewhat of a pioneer in developing this," Mr Lund said.

"We've developed quite a lot here that's unique.

"We actually go out (and test), put a submarine on the bottom and they go down and attach to it, do all that sort of stuff."

Organisers plan to record the webinar, which starts at 8pm, to make it available in the future.
