Albury Airport scores $2.6 million in federal government funding

Albury has scored $2.6 million from the regional airports funding program with Narrandera landing the next biggest amount with $1.11 million.

Funding at Albury will be used on taxiway and apron upgrades, drainage works and conversion of the runway threshold lights to LED and forms part of more than $5 million in planned improvements over the next four years.

"Our airport plays a vital role in providing safe and reliable air services for Albury-Wodonga, the Murray River and North-East Victoria," Albury mayor Kevin Mack said.

"The works will also enhance our ability to provide improved access and efficiency for our emergency services."

Australian Airports Association chief executive James Goodwin said funding for regional airports had never been more important.

"Regional airports were among the first hit and will be one of the last to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic with passenger numbers dropping more than 70 per cent during the peak," he said.

"This investment from the Australian government not only ensures regional communities can continue to enjoy safe and efficient air transport.

"it also future proofs regional Australia for generations to come with infrastructure which drives economic growth and connectivity."

Also receiving funding in Sussan Ley's electorate were Griffith ($498,850), Berrigan ($300,000), Federation ($295,210) and Hay ($279,904) also shared in the funding.
