Monday's announcement that regional Victoria will come out of lockdown at midnight allows the league to resume this weekend after four weeks of inactivity.
But exactly what that return to play looks like remains uncertain, with the final round of the home-and-away season scheduled for this weekend.
"It's a step in the right direction," league president Rex Gray said.
"We will have discussions with the clubs because we've only got the finals the following week, so we've got to talk about that set-up."
From Tuesday, community sport in Victoria will be open for all ages, training and competition.
But it'll once again be limited to the minimum number of people required to participate in and facilitate the activity, with no spectators allowed other than a parent for junior players.
"It's getting very close to crunch time with football, especially with finals just down the road," Gray said.
"A lot of discussions have to take place and we do need spectators.
ALSO IN SPORT:
"It's been a tough financial year for everyone, two years in fact, and everyone needs to get cash in their account.
"It's very significant at this time of year, with time running out, to get that bank balance up."
Gray admitted the constant uncertainty around Covid restrictions had been extremely challenging.
"The whole thing is run by volunteers and it can get very tough on them," he said.
"With the players themselves, not knowing what's happening, it can become very trying.
"Everyone's just got to stick together and get through it.
"I don't know whether this has saved the season but it's probably eased the burden a bit."
