Dean Street assault victim frustrated by legal system

The man, one of two people attacked by Mason Richards and a co-accused on May 8, feels like the process was a "complete waste of time".

Richards this week avoided serving time in custody over the incident, and was instead ordered to perform 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was warned by magistrate Miranda Moody he was close to being sent to prison for his "cowardly" offending, which included filming the victims after the assault.

Richards unleashed punches and kicks during the incident, near the City Walk Arcade.

One of the victims, who was knocked out, and suffered a fractured cheekbone and shoulder damage, told The Border Mail he still had some lasting issues.

"I still go to work but there's still some pain," he said.

"My face is alright but my shoulder still hurts.

"I've lost my income and I've had to pay for surgery.

"For someone who was already on a corrections order or whatever he was on, to break that, he should be in jail."

Richards was on a conditional release order at the time of the incident, for assault.

The victim said the legal process had been frustrating and only learnt of his attacker's court

"I'm just disappointed, that's all," he said.

"Nothing I say will change it.

"I really don't care for the bloke, you've just got to move on now.

"There's not much I can do about it."

The sentence is considered a term of imprisonment for 18 months, served in the community.
