Alpine Shire Council aims to have net zero greenhouse gas emissions inside two years

The council adopted its climate action plan, to be monitored annually, at its September meeting this week to ensure it is accountable for the impact its operations have on global greenhouse gas emissions and wants to encourage the community to positive climate choices.

"The natural beauty of our region is integral to the prosperity of our community, and as the Alpine Shire's elected representatives we have a responsibility to do everything we can to protect that natural beauty and preserve it for our future generations," Alpine Shire mayor John Forsyth said.

"The 2019-20 bushfire season highlighted our vulnerability to extreme weather events, and the global COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the way we work, play, learn and live.

Alpine Shire has made steps to reduce its corporate emissions with all of the council's electricity usage from the start of the financial year from renewable energy as part of the Victorian Energy Collaboration's power purchase agreement.

A reduction in electricity use has been prioritised with LED street lights, installation of solar PV and battery infrastructure on council-managed buildings and replacement of council's vehicle fleet with greener options some of the key avenues.

Council's baseline greenhouse gas emissions from its operations is at 2384 tonnes CO2 equivalent per year.
