Any flickering hopes of playing finals were finally snuffed out on Sunday when the league announced the season had been cancelled.
With community sport not allowed to resume in NSW until 80 percent of the state has received two COVID vaccinations, there was simply no way of hosting finals, even without crowds, by the league's self-imposed deadline of October 2.
"The league, in partnership with AFL NSW-ACT, explored all avenues for continuing the season in the hope of playing finals," Hume league general manager Dalton Wegener said.
"However, the NSW Government's public health orders released on Thursday forced a premature end to the season.
"It is disappointing for everyone in our football and netball community to cut a season short, but the league is committed to ensure community safety and to follow advice from health experts and the government.
"We would like to thank everyone for their passion and commitment during this difficult year. It has been a memorable season and we look forward to getting out on the park next year.
"The keague, in consultation with the clubs, will determine a date for the presentation day/night and the question of awarding a premier for each grade at a later date.
"The league will return next season, better than ever.
"Until then, we trust everyone in the wider community will keep safe."
