Murray River police district chief Superintendent Paul Smith flagged the move on Friday.
"Police are not investigating any offences in relation to his journey on the train," Superintendent Smith said.
He is now being accommodated in a medi-hotel under the care of Albury Wodonga Health.
Transport for NSW declined to say if any changes had been made to its systems, in light of the man having boarded the train while COVID positive.
A spokesperson said it "continues to work with the NSW police on any public health order compliance issues".
"NSW TrainLink regional rail and coach customers are being booked in a COVIDSafe way to accommodate physical distancing where possible and face masks must continue to be worn on board," the spokesperson said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Meanwhile, more exposure sites have emerged in the Albury Council area which is under a seven-day lockdown.
The BWS Boomerang bottle shop in Union Road, Lavington, had a COVID positive customer visit last Saturday between 7pm and 7.15pm and the premises were to undergo a deep clean last night although that had not been requested by NSW Health.
"The wellbeing of our customers, team, and communities is our highest priority, and we will continue to work closely with NSW Health, and in line with public health advice, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure ongoing safety in our stores," a spokesperson for the Endeavour Group, which owns BWS, said.
"The store is temporarily closed, and we thank customers for their patience and understanding."
Staff are in isolation awaiting COVID test results, but it is expected to reopen on Saturday.
Coles has also confirmed it had a COVID-infected person visit its Lavington store on Wednesday.
It has since been cleaned and more details, once cleared with NSW Health, will be posted on Coles' COVID webpage.
That site already notes a COVID-afflicted customer attended Coles Express at Wangaratta between 7.30am and 7.45am last Monday.
A lack of postings of exposure sites in Albury by Murrumbidgee Local Health District on Friday created frustration among residents.
Albury MP Justin Clancy said "without those venues of concern being identified we've got to maintain a vigilance".
"The COVID tracing staff are working hard and endeavouring to do their best job," he said.
