Albury-born Charlie helped Melbourne break their 57-year flag drought in the Demons' 74-point win against Western Bulldogs at Perth's Optus Stadium on Saturday.
His grandfather Bob was watching the game from his Gold Coast home, but still felt all of the excitement when the 21-year-old small forward kicked a goal in the first quarter.
"That was very good," Bob said
"I sent him a text and said I'm very proud of you Charlie, and Kate and Paul (his parents) are very proud too."
Spargo finished the game with seven disposals, four kicks and three handballs during the Demons' demolition of the Dogs.
Bob reached the 1961 grand final with Footscray against Hawthorn, but he said Charlie becomes the first Spargo to claim a flag at the highest level.
Bob Sr, Bob Jr, and his brother Ricky all played senior football for Footscray, while Charlie's father Paul spent most of his AFL career with North Melbourne.
