Qantas plans to resume Wagga's flights to Sydney and Melbourne in response to NSW COVID-19 roadmap

The airline's flights between Wagga and Melbourne remain suspended but could resume as early as November, depending if the Victoria government sticks to its plan to open up amid the Delta strain outbreak.

Qantas has announced it will be "significantly increasing regional flying within NSW from 25 October 2021, in line with the state government's roadmap, to around 40 per cent of pre-COVID levels".

Qantas is currently operating two weekly return flights between Sydney and Wagga, which are scheduled to increase to seven flights by October 25 and then up to 25 per week by December.

When Victoria opens its border to NSW, the number of return flights between Wagga and Melbourne would likely resume at the rate of four services per week.

Wagga airport's other commercial passenger airline, Regional Express (Rex) has stated it would continue its schedule of reduced flights and staff stand-downs until at least October 31.

"In the light of the current rate of infection, the announced intentions of the various state governments concerning lockdowns and border closures and the need for lead time for advanced ticket sales, Rex ... is left with no option but to extend the suspension of its domestic services and reduction of regional services up until 31 October 2021," Rex's statement said.

"This will also mean an extension of the stand down period for staff up until this time."

Rex also plans to have all its staff vaccinated by October 31.
