St Patrick's fell to grand finalists North Albury and Lavington, while Wodonga Raiders also fell to finalists in Albury and Corowa.
Tallangatta and East Albury are the only other winless teams, but both only played the one game after having an early bye.
The external expectations for St Pat's and Raiders contrast with the former playing in last year's preliminary final and picking up one of the biggest off-season recruits in ex-Victorian Premier Cricket club best and fairest Liam Scammell, while the latter snared the wooden spoon.
"If we win it will naturally help the confidence of the boys, but as long as we're doing all the right things and improving," Raiders' coach Stewart Pearce said when quizzed on how important an early win was.
