Patrolling police disturbed a group at the Mactier Avenue site in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Multiple cans of deodorant and a barbecue gas bottle appeared to have been used to start a fire.
While the blaze ignited, the incident was brought under control before the splash park equipment was badly damaged.
General duties officers spotted the group about 3.30am.
Detective Senior Constable James Howarth said police were seeking witnesses to the incident and security camera footage.
"Thankfully it didn't ignite that well," he said.
"There was minor damage to the plastic.
"A group of people were seen by police running from the area.
"If anybody has any footage they can contact police or Crime Stoppers."
The group had jumped a fence to access the popular splash park site.
Burnt debris was visible at the scene on Thursday afternoon.
