Albury police will be out in force this weekend amid an expected surge in traffic and recent fatal crashes in the Riverina.
Sydneysiders are now able to come to the Border following the easing of restrictions.
Albury Inspector Scott Trewhella said officers were focused on distracted, dangerous and impaired drivers.
"Whilst we're all keen to see our loved ones and we've had a lot of time away from them, taking that little bit of extra time to drive safely is far better than not seeing them at all," he said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"With regional travel opening up to the rest of the state, we are anticipating a large number of people coming down from Sydney.
"We're going to see a significant deployment of highway patrol and police district resources to tackle that.
"Our goal is for everybody to get where they're going safely."
A similar operation is running in Victoria.
