St John's Jindera primary school sets up Mathew West Endeavour Scholarship

The Mathew West Endeavour Scholarship will remember one of the school's most popular and positive students, after the 10-year-old died tragically last month.

St John's principal Brad Moss said Mathew was deeply missed by his mates and teaching staff at the school.

"This scholarship is one way we can remember a beautiful, energetic and respectful boy who left a positive mark at his school," he said.

With the blessing of his parents, David and Emma West, the scholarship recognises the qualities Mathew displayed at school:

Mr Moss said teachers and staff at St John's were "constantly blown away by the things (Mathew) would notice and how he put others first".

"Mathew was always kind, uplifting and a bit cheeky," he said.

"He encouraged others around him and gave out lots of compliments. Our staff enjoyed how passionate he was. Whatever work there was to do in class, he would work hard and never give up, even when something was challenging."

Mathew's friends remember most "Westy's humour", according to Mr Moss.

"(They said) he was funny, mischievous and would make everyone smile whoever he was around."

Mr Moss said the annual scholarship reinforced the positive qualities the school strived to develop in all its students.

He thanked St John's families and the wider community for their support and prayers for the West family.

Mathew was farewelled at a funeral service in Albury after he died in an Upper Murray car crash on October 23.
