The party has declined to confirm the woman's identity, but The Border Mail understands she hails from an area south of Euroa.
The Liberals' Indi federal electorate conference chairman Tony Schneider said the party was "going through internal processes" and he could not say when the candidate would be confirmed.
However, he noted there was unlikely to be a preselection process as occurred for the last federal election when three contenders vied for the party's nomination with Steve Martin successful.
A Wodonga resident, Mr Martin declined to run again in 2022.
If the woman stands, she would be the southern-most Liberal candidate in Indi since former MP Ewen Cameron who was on Euroa Council prior to his parliamentary stint from 1977 to 1993.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Schneider declined to predict when the Liberal candidate would be revealed, saying that was in the hands of the party's head office.
Meanwhile, Greg Mirabella, the husband of former Indi MP Sophie Mirabella, is seeking a place on the Victorian Liberal Party Senate ticket for the next election.
He will learn on Saturday whether he is successful.
The Liberals' Coalition partner the Nationals have confirmed they will contest Indi at the next election, despite a poor showing in 2019 with their vote falling below 10 per cent after being 17 per cent in 2016.
Nationals state director Matthew Harris said "we will be running", although a preselection date has not been decided.
It is expected to be in the new year, with advertisements for preselection candidates to run three to four weeks beforehand.
Indi is held by Helen Haines who won office in 2019, succeeding another Independent Cathy McGowan.
