The blaze broke out inside the Cleanaway vehicle about 7am on Monday.
The driver noticed the blaze in the rubbish container of the truck and drove to the town's fire station in a bid to have the fire extinguished.
CFA captain Gloria Pizzolitto said the brigade was alerted and spent about an hour bringing the incident under control.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"Initially the truck was outside the fire station but we had to move to another location to dump the material and use an excavator to pull the rubbish apart and put it out," she said.
"It was only an early morning run, he'd done less than 150 bins so there wasn't much inside the truck.
"There was a bit of damage on the inside of the truck, but the fire was mainly contained to the rubbish."
It's unclear what sparked the blaze.
