Interim plant manger Scott Boxshall made that observation on Monday as factory owner Nestle revealed it had entered an Australia-wide pact to shift sites to green power.

"It's terrific for the local community because it shows a strong investment in the future of the site," he said.

Under a deal with CWP Renewables, power will be sourced from its NSW wind farms near Mudgee and Glen Innes and supplied to Wahgunyah via the national grid.

The arrangement began on Monday and follows other environment measures such as changing lighting in the factory from fluorescent to LED technology.

The Wahgunyah factory's annual electricity use equates to 3100 households.

Nestle forecasts the move to renewable power across Australia will reduce its carbon emissions by 73,000 tonnes each year.
