Band treasurer Lindsay Hanchett gave that estimate on Tuesday as he discussed a rehousing offer from Wodonga Senior Secondary College.

School principal Vern Hilditch signalled on Monday that he hoped the group would find a home at the campus as part of a revamped cultural hub at Galvin Hall.

"We've got the offer out there, we're in the process of negotiation, I think they've got a few issues with the relocation, but that's their call," Mr Hilditch said.

The linchpin is finance from Wodonga Council to assist with the move.

Mr Hanchett said the deal presented by the school to move into an area near the hall was attractive but council cash was crucial.

"The offer that has been made is certainly very good, but nothing has been signed off and no funds put towards it," he said.

"At the moment the City of Wodonga has never put forward a plan to fund the move or replace the building.

"There has been some misconception about that, but I've been in the process from day one and the council has never made a financial offer."

A council spokeswoman said talks had occurred.

"There have been no formal offers of support, but the council has committed to providing some assistance to the band at the appropriate time," she said.

Mr Hanchett said a move would not occur soon, given the need for a pact and work at the proposed school site.

"We would be looking at least two years, that's what we believe, but we haven't been given a timeframe because there hasn't been an agreement signed," he said.

The band's hold on in its Hovell Street rooms has been under threat since 2013 when the council first moved to evict it before the Victorian Treasury overruled that process.

The council is now unable to act until the group has a new base.

The band has been in Hovell Street since 1967 when a timber building it previously occupied at a council depot in Brockley Street was shifted.

The brick section of the band's home, which fronts Hovell Street, was built in the early 1980s.
