Justin Szabolics was one of three people in a car pulled over by NSW Police at a Wodonga Place border control point on October 27, 2020.
One of the three, Natasha Harper, who was sitting in the back seat, had $32,070 of the total amount stuffed in her jacket pockets.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Harper later failed to appear in court to answer 32 charges related to the search of the car after she, Szabolics and another man were found to not have the correct permits to cross the border into NSW.
In total, $52,020 was uncovered in the car.
Albury Local Court magistrate Richard Funston has been told that Szabolics admitted to having a drug addiction, as did the other two people in the car.
"He admitted to crossing the border in an attempt to begin living in NSW," police said.
The defence for Szabolics asked Mr Funston for his sentencing to be put off until later next year as he was facing a District Court committal in Sydney on unrelated charges.
The request was that the matter be adjourned to either late March or early April.
The hope, Mr Funston was told, was that this would allow for the preparation of specialist psychological reports on Szabolics for both matters.
Szabolics is facing sentence in the Local Court after pleading guilty to charges of dealing with the proceeds of crime, not provide or give false information to COVID-19 border control and two counts of failing to appear on bail.
However, Mr Funston instead adjourned sentencing to a mention in Sydney's Central Local Court on February 3.
Police found a further $19,950 in cash hidden under the front passenger seat of the car.
Most of Harper's charges related to stolen identity cards in her possession, including inside her purse.
One of the men later claimed the cash was related to his business.
