Wodonga man facing sentence early next year on 2 high-range drink-driving charges

But that wasn't the end of it for Sonam Tshring Shepra, Albury Local Court has heard.

Just over 18 months later, on November 21, he crashed his car into a tree on McDonald Road, Lavington, while he looked at his mobile phone.

Once again, Shepra was more than three times the blood-alcohol content limit.

The two charge sequences were of such concern that defence lawyer Mitchell Brooks asked for the preparation of a sentence assessment report.

This report will, in part, consider the possibility of sentencing options other than full-time jail and with NSW Community Corrections supervision.

Shepra, 25, of French Terrace, Wodonga, pleaded guilty to two charges of driving with a high-range prescribed concentration of alcohol, dangerous driving, negligent driving and failing to appear on bail.

Police told the court that the first offence took place back on April 3, 2020, just after 11.30pm.

Shepra approached the intersection of the Hume Freeway exit ramp and Racecourse Road in his Nissan Micra.

He turned left onto Racecourse Road but crossed to the wrong side of the road just as a police vehicle was passing the intersection.

The police car had to swerve out of the lane to avoid a collision, then did a U-turn and came up behind Sherpa's car.

He told them he wasn't carrying his licence and then when informed about his driving replied: "I'm going to be over."

Shepra had a reading of 0.177.

He admitted to drinking five stubbies of full-strength beer between 7pm and 11pm.

The second incident last month happened on McDonald Road, Lavington, just before 2am.

Police said Shepra was looking at his phone as his car mounted the northern kerb, crashing into a tree next to the footpath.

He had a reading of 0.155.

Shepra will be sentenced on February 7.
