"It must have been terrifying," Albury Local Court magistrate Richard Funston told Aaron Thomas Field.
"You're a big man."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Nevertheless, Mr Funston accepted a submission from defence lawyer Jaimee Simonsen that Field's case was best dealt with through the continuation of his mental health treatment plan, rather than as a criminal matter.
Mr Funston said he had been encouraged by reports put to the court that Field, 38, was "doing the right things now" through complying with the plan and his medication regime.
"There's no doubt Mr Field needs to keep on his medication and stay off the high use of alcohol," he said.
Mr Funston told Field, who previously pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, that using alcohol meant his medication would not work.
Ms Simonsen said it was clear that Field had committed a "nasty" assault, as Mr Funston himself had described the attack.
The incident took place at the Lavington home of the victim's mother on August 9.
The victim, now aged 47, went to the house about 10am, with Field arriving soon afterwards.
As she walked past him in the backyard with a cup of coffee, Field called her a "prostitute" and a "slut".
She told him this was not acceptable and their mother asked him to leave before trying to push him out the side gate.
He walked towards his sister and punched her to the face, leaving her with a black eye.
