Disability pensioner Andrew Richard Pike had been in the backseat of a car with the victim's ex-partner when he made the first threat, following an argument with her about the cats.
After they drove from Hamilton Valley to the East Albury Bunnings store, they visited the nearby unit of another friend who had been in the car.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Albury Local Court has been told that Pike and his intellectually disabled partner argued again.
But this time it was about Pike smoking cigarettes, something the victim, 38, feared would lead to her losing custody of her son.
"The accused," police said, "become aggressive and punched the victim's vehicle on the bonnet ... and caused a dint" that caused her great distress.
"The accused continued to become more agitated and while inside their unit has grabbed a knife and put it to his throat, threatening to kill himself."
A mutual friend of the couple took the knife off Pike, who left.
Pike, 46, of Wagga Road, pleaded guilty to intimidation and destroy or damage property over the December 11 incident.
Defence lawyer Jack Murray said that while Pike had a "relatively" lengthy criminal record, this had not involved violence in the past 20 years.
He said Pike suffered from "quite a substantial" cognitive impairment from an acquired-brain injury 30 years ago.
Being in custody overnight after his arrest was "a harrowing experience".
Magistrate Richard Funston placed Pike on a 12-month community corrections order, with supervision, and warned him that next time "you will be going to jail".
