The tremor, lasting less than a minute, was felt throughout most of Victoria, including Melbourne, and parts of southern NSW about 8.55pm.
The US geological survey is reporting an earthquake of 5.2 magnitude, with the epicentre 10 kilometres southwest of Moe in the state’s southeast.
Tremors have been reported from as far away as Wagga.
The Border tremor was mild enough to be missed by many.
"We felt the #earthquake in Albury. When I say we, I mean the missus did. How could I not notice something like that? #oblivious," tweeted Steve Tervert.
The Border Mail has been told of tremors throughout the North East, including Albury, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Kiewa, Bright and Myrtleford.
One reader from Mulwala reported couches and lamps moved.
No major damage has been reported at this stage.
