Public nominations have opened for Australian of the Year, with the search to find 2022 winner Dylan Alcott's successor kicking into gear.
Any individual is able to nominate someone, with 128 people selected for their state or territory finals which are held in October and November.
The winners then head to the national finals, held annually on January 25.
Along with the main gong, the council is seeking nominations for Senior (aged 65 years or more) and Young (aged 16-30) Australian of the Year, along with Australia's Local Hero.
Council chief executive Karlie Brand said nominating might seem a small step, but it puts in motion some recognition for a special individual.
"Nominating a person for the awards brings their contributions or achievements to national attention - it elevates their personal story and allows others to appreciate what they've done," she said.
"Every announcement of an Australian of the Year started with someone submitting a nomination for them, so the person you nominate could very well be one of our next award recipients."
Along with Mr Alcott, the reigning winners are Val Dempsey (Senior), Daniel Nour (Young) and Shanna Whan (Local Hero).
Nominations can be made at australianoftheyear.org.au.
They close on July 31.
