He sold it and built more and more, and now his Albury business, Mountain Trail Campers, is turning out more than 100 high-quality campers a year, each designed for fast set-ups and off-road touring.
Buyers can pay anything from $28,000 to $50,000 depending on the model and extras but Mr Edwards believes they offer far more than cheap Chinese-made imported models and are well-suited to tackle the toughest Australian conditions.
Mountain Trail Campers recently relocated from Mate Street to Knights Road and now employs 10 people full-time.
The business sells campers all over Australia using the big caravan and camping shows in Melbourne and Sydney, and recently featured on the cover of trade magazine Camper Trailer Australia.
It was also judged as a finalist in the 2011 and 2012 off-road camper of the year competition.
Mr Edwards says the steel and most key components are purchased on the Border.
Standard inclusions for the campers are a queen size bed, slide-out kitchen, slide-out refrigerator and pantry, internal staircase, battery management system with internal LED lights, 130-litre water storage and numerous storage areas for clothes and other items.
Some models have a diesel hot water service with a shower and ducted heating.
“Our campers are easy to tow, fast to set up and suitable for families with a desire for quick weekend getaways and holidays,” Mr Edwards said.
“We get customers from young couples in their 30s with children to lots of grey nomads.
“All our campers are available with an eight-foot tent as standard or an optional 10-foot family tent.”
Mountain Trail Campers has distributors in Queensland, Tasmania and in Western Australia.
