Resident anger at Carrington Street thefts

RESIDENTS of Carrington Street in central Albury say they are fed up after a spate of break-ins and thefts.

In the latest incident, a Honda postie bike was stolen from Jeanette and Wayne Baker’s garage on Tuesday morning.

Footage from a neighbour’s security camera shows a man spending an hour removing bolts to open the garage door before stealing the bike.

Nearby resident Lachlan, who did not provide his last name for fear of reprisals, said three cars had been stolen from his home since Christmas; another car had had its windows smashed, and his home had been broken into.

One car was found burnt out at Mungabareena Reserve, another was found damaged at Boomerang Drive, and a third was never found.

Lachlan said the thefts had cost thousands of dollars in repairs and replacement vehicles.

“It’s cost me nearly $10,000, not to mention the emotional cost of sleepless nights,” he said.

“You hear a twig break and you wake up.

“Just when you get settled your neighbour’s place gets broken into, you’re never at rest.”

Ms Baker said a Toyota Tarago had been stolen from her property several years ago and dumped in the Murray River.

She said her neighbours were constantly being targeted by thieves and many had upgraded security in an effort to deter the criminals.

“It’s just ridiculous,” she said.

“We’re just over it, we’ve had enough.

“Central Albury should be one of the safest areas but we’re not.

“There’s always something happening around the area with break-ins.”

Police are investigating the motorbike theft, which occurred about 6.20am on Tuesday.
