A Wodonga detective was in Albury Local Court on Monday to witness McLean pleading guilty to this and a drug possession charge via a video link to Junee jail.
The 25-year-old initially tried to bluff his way out of trouble by telling the arresting officers, members of the Murray police district drug unit, that the drugs in his motel room were for "personal use".
But police weren't having any of it, given that what he had with him was about five times that required to meet guidelines set down to determine an indictable quantity.
McLean was arrested after detectives went to the Hovell Tree Inn on March 26 about 12.30pm, acting on information that the room "contained an amount of cannabis".
He was in the room by himself, though he had checked-in for two nights with his girlfriend.
MORE LOCAL NEWS:
At first McLean denied there were drugs in the room, but a short time later changed his mind.
He said there were about 30 ecstasy pills in a bedside drawer, obtained the day before from a mate.
McLean refused to name who had supplied him with the pills.
He also indicated there was a small amount of "bud" or cannabis, which was on the bed in plain view.
The 27 ecstasy pills weighed 6.8 grams and the cannabis, one gram.
Police established the drugs were for supply, given the estimated street value of between $400 and $1350.
After pleading guilty McLean said he was keen to have his case finalised, but magistrate Rodney Brender said he first wanted a sentence assessment report.
"And I see he's wanted in Victoria," Mr Brender said.
McLean was further remanded in custody to be sentenced on May 29.
