A 22-year-old man was driving a silver Kia on Thursday morning with four other passengers, who were international students, when he lost control and hit the tree on a median strip.
The front seat passenger died at the scene and Murray River police Inspector Scott Russell said the driver, who had been in a critical condition since the crash, had also died in hospital on Tuesday.
"Investigations in that matter are ongoing and a report will be prepared for the coroner with that updated information," he said.
The truck driver from a second unrelated Hume Highway crash at Mullengandra that day remains in hospital in Canberra.
"As our leads are investigated, we'll come up with an answer as to what occurred," Inspector Russell said.
