The visitors kept Griffith out in a thrilling final 10 minutes to score a 21-15 win.
"The players were pretty tenacious in defence, they defended pretty well, particularly the last 10 minutes of the game and held them out," coach Paul Musarra said.
Given a try and conversion is seven points, Griffith was on the verge of stealing the win and consigning the Border outfit to a fourth successive loss to start the season.
The Steamers were coming off a 21-point loss to Leeton.
Fullback Sam Allen was superb, scoring the club's three tries with his pace and evasion proving difficult to counter.
"(Prop) Tim Carroll played well, while Steve Burns played a full game in the reserves and then played the full match in first grade as well," Musarra said.
There's a general bye this weekend, but the Steamers will fancy their chances of racking up a second victory when they host winless CSU.
