Police initially suspected that Dean Andrew Brennick had something illegal in a black plastic power tool case he was carrying.
The box was empty, it was revealed after they asked him to open it, but the flick knife was uncovered in a bag in his car.
Brennick, 48, failed to front Albury Local Court on Monday to answer a charge of possess or use a prohibited weapon without a permit.

Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim convicted him in his absence and adjourned the case to May 20 for sentencing.
Police told the court that Brennick had convictions for offences relating to "drug activity" and traffic matters, as well as violence.
The incident over which he was charged took place on March 13.
The court was told that several Albury police went to Sylvania Avenue, North Albury, about 5.30pm in response to a report that a wanted person was at an address in the street.
When they arrived they saw Brennick standing on the footpath talking to a resident of the property, which they already knew was used for drug activity.
After speaking to Brennick and asking him to open the power tool case, they asked him where he obtained the item.
He indicated it came from that same address.
But police were still suspicious so they searched Brennick, though nothing was uncovered.
The flick knife, with an activation button to open and close and with a black blade, was then found.
Brennick admitted the knife was his, that he bought it from a market in Melbourne and used it when he went fishing.
